During 2005, approximately
17 million vehicles were recalled due to safety defects. Ford manufactured
the largest number of vehicles that failed to meet even the minimum safety
standards–6 million. General Motors produced the second-largest number
of vehicles subject to safety recalls–5 million. Toyota produced another
2.2 million autos with safety defects that led to recalls.
In some cases, owners of the unsafe vehicles do not receive the recall notices.
Notices may be sent to the wrong address or not sent at all. For example,
a consumer in the Santa Barbara area owned a Ford truck that burst into flames
and burned to a crisp. Only after she contacted her insurance company did
she learn that Ford trucks are prone to catching on fire, and her truck was
subject to recall.
