Beware the 'laundered' lemon

"The 'lemon laws' on the books in every state make it easier for you to get a refund or replacement if you buy a hopelessly defective new car or truck. Unfortunately, some of those lemons are 'laundered' – sold as used vehicles to owners who know nothing abut their troubled past.

This month, the Federal Trade Commission will hold a 'public forum' on lemon-laundering by automakers and car dealers. Rosemary Shahan, president of Consumers for Auto Reliability and Safety, one of the dozen or so watchdog groups petitioning the FTC for action, describes lemon-laundering as 'rampant.' "
